Healthcare in China for Students
China's healthcare system is modern and affordable compared to Western countries. Here's how to access it as an international student:
Campus Clinics
Most universities have an on-campus clinic (校医院) for minor issues — colds, cuts, vaccinations. Very cheap (¥10–50) and convenient. English-speaking doctors are limited; bring a Chinese-speaking friend if possible.
Hospitals
For serious issues, go to a city hospital. Top hospitals have international clinics:
- Beijing United Family Hospital — English-speaking, more expensive
- Shanghai East International Medical Center
- Public hospitals — cheaper, may need translation help
How to See a Doctor
- Register at the front desk (挂号) — bring passport
- Choose a department (e.g. internal medicine 内科)
- Wait to be called
- See doctor, get prescription
- Pay and pick up medication at pharmacy
Health Insurance
Universities require international students to have health insurance (¥600–800/year). It covers most hospital visits and emergencies. CSC scholars get insurance included. Always carry your insurance card.
Pharmacies
Pharmacies (药店) are everywhere. Common medicines (cold, fever, stomach) are cheap. Bring prescriptions for chronic conditions with a doctor's letter.
