Why Mobile Payments Matter in China

China is nearly cashless. WeChat Pay and Alipay are used for everything from street food to rent. As a student, you'll need at least one.

WeChat Pay Setup

  1. Download WeChat (international version works)
  2. Go to Me > Services > Wallet
  3. Link a Chinese bank card or a supported foreign Visa/Mastercard
  4. Verify your identity (passport required)
  5. Scan QR codes to pay anywhere

Alipay Setup

  1. Download Alipay (English version available)
  2. Go to Me > Bank Cards
  3. Link a Chinese or foreign bank card
  4. Verify identity with passport
  5. Use 'Scan' to pay or show 'Payment Code'

Foreign Cards

Both WeChat Pay and Alipay now support foreign Visa/Mastercard. Great for short-term stays, but for longer study, a Chinese bank account is cheaper (no foreign transaction fees).

Common Uses

  • Pay for metro and bus rides
  • Order food delivery (Meituan, Ele.me)
  • Buy from Taobao, JD.com
  • Pay rent and utilities
  • Transfer money to friends

Troubleshooting

  • Account frozen? Visit a service center with your passport
  • Can't link foreign card? Try a different card or visit a bank
  • Limits too low? Verify identity fully to raise limits
