Why You Need a Chinese Bank Account

A local bank account is essential for receiving scholarships, paying rent, and topping up WeChat Pay and Alipay without high foreign-card fees.

Best Banks for Students

  • Bank of China — most international-friendly, good for transfers
  • ICBC — largest bank, wide ATM network
  • China Construction Bank — student accounts easy
  • Agricultural Bank of China — many university branches

What to Bring

  • Passport (valid)
  • Admission letter or student ID
  • Residence permit (once you have one)
  • Chinese phone number
  • Cash for initial deposit (¥10–100)
  • Foreigner Permanent Registration Form (from local police)

The Process

  1. Go to a bank branch (morning, weekday)
  2. Tell staff you want to open an account (开账户)
  3. Show documents and fill forms
  4. Get your card (usually same day)
  5. Download the bank app, link to WeChat Pay & Alipay

Receiving Money from Home

Use Wise, Revolut, or bank wire transfers. SWIFT transfers take 3–5 days. Always include your full name, account number, and bank SWIFT code.
